About Town of Sexsmith

The Town of Sexsmith is a farming town in Alberta's Peace River Country, about 20 km north of Grande Prairie. It is a municipality, not a First Nation.

The Town of Sexsmith is a municipality in the Peace River Country of northwestern Alberta, one of the province's most fertile growing areas. It is not a First Nation or a reserve. A mayor and town council govern it, and it does not belong to a tribal council. The 2021 Census counted 2,427 residents.

The townsite was first called Bennville after J.B. "Benny" Foster, who homesteaded there in 1911. It was later renamed for David Sexsmith, a trapper and trader who first came to the area in 1898. Sexsmith became a village in 1929 and a town in 1979.

Farming has always shaped the community. Grain companies began building elevators in 1917. From 1939 to 1949, Sexsmith shipped more grain than any other point in the British Empire, which earned it the name "Grain Capital of the British Empire." In 1976 the Northern Alberta Rapeseed Plant opened with 80 employees.
